Prior to entering the legal sector, he worked in local newspaper publishing, and as a freelance writer for international relations magazines.

Giles holds a MSc in Political Theory from Radboud University, Nijmegen, and a BA in Political Science & Philosophy from University of Birmingham. In both degrees, he focused heavily on international legal theory, specifically on the function of war crime tribunals in nation-building and affirming cultural norms.
